The Philippine National Police will soon set up checkpoints and beef up security especially for travelers, in time for the long All Saints’ weekend, Malacañang on Saturday said.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, in an interview of government-run dzRB radio, said: “In view of the long weekend ahead, the PNP has informed us it is beefing up security efforts. We expect many to go home to the provinces so the police will establish checkpoints and increase visibility especially for travelers."

She said the PNP is also securing bus terminals, as well as air and sea ports, which travelers are expected to crowd as the four-day long weekend nears.

“It is our usual protocol to have police on alert on occasions where there will be a mass exodus," she said.

An earlier report on dzBB radio said that while police are still on normal alert, they have started to watch over transport terminals as well as public areas including supermarkets, shopping malls and commercial establishments.

These areas are expected to be crowded in the days leading to the All Saints’ Day.

For this year, Filipinos can look forward to a long weekend starting Oct. 29, after Malacañang declared Oct. 31, Monday, a non-working day.

This year’s All Saints’ Day falls on a Tuesday.
