MANILA, Philippines—President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo “must be really so bad” that three “men of God” have thought it necessary to join the race for Malacañang in order to put the country to rights.
At least this is how another so-called man of God, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz, sees it.
“These are very interesting times because since I was born, this is the first occasion when no less than three religious men are aspiring for the presidency,” said the 74-year-old prelate, an indefatigable and outspoken critic of Ms Arroyo and her administration.
Three months before aspirants for the presidency in the May 2010 elections have to formally declare their candidacy, about a dozen personalities, politicians or otherwise, have already declared their presidential ambitions to anyone who would listen.
These include pastor Eduardo “Brother Eddie” Villanueva of the born-again Jesus is Lord Movement, who is taking a second stab at the presidency; self-styled El Shaddai born-again evangelist Mariano “Brother Mike” Velarde; and a Catholic priest-turned-politician, Pampanga Gov. Eddie Panlilio.
